In our modern world it is increasingly important to have a second language. English, as the language of international communication, is essential to be able to participate in academic, cultural, social and commercial activities in a global society made up of such different nations and cultures.

Since St. George’s School is a bilingual school for Colombian students, and respecting the importance of the teaching-learning process, both Spanish and English are included in the classroom from an early age. The English program begins in Prekinder and continues throughout a student’s school life.

Specifically, starting in the 2013-2014 academic year, the school is implementing the CIE Primary programme (Cambridge International Examinations) for grades Transition through Grade 5. This curriculum will bring even higher standards and results to our programme, and our students.

Finally, no matter what interests and personal, academic and professional goals our students might have, the competent use of English will always bring them great value in their lives.

Some of the projects in the English Department are:

International curriculum and exams

• Implementation of the CIE curriculum (Cambridge International Examinations).
• Coordination and presentation of exams from Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the University of Cambridge.

Reading Promotion

• Coordination with the Spanish and Literature Department for promoting reading.
• Classroom libraries for grades Prekinder to Grade 2.
• Family Catalogue of Books in English for grades Prekinder to Grade 2.
• Story hour – reading of children’s books with teachers, staff and members of ASIN, the parents’ association.

Writing Promotion

• A curricular program focused on writing for students in Primary (Writers’ Workshop) and High School (Writers’ Studio).

Workshops for Bilingualism at Home

• Bilingualism in the Home – workshop (free) for parents.
• Engaging in English – series of four workshops for parents to learn more about the topics of bilingualism in our families.

Other

• Presentation of theatre plays and storytellers – in English – from international companies for Primary and High School students.
