!! Students Who Have Outstanding Performance in Sports

Introduction (read by Tatiana Garcia)

Sport has been a useful way for people to increase their mastery of nature and the environment. The history of sports can teach us a great deal about social changes and about the nature of sport itself. Sport seems to involve basic human skills being developed and exercised for their own sake, in parallel with being exercised for their usefulness. Of course, as we go further back in history the evidence makes this more difficult to support. It also shows how society has changed its beliefs and therefore there are changes in the rules.

Sports have become a very important part of our everyday life here at Saint George´s School. Today we would like to pay tribute to those students who have had outstanding performance in sports here at school. We also feel it is important to recognize all of the hard work and effort put in by the Physical Education Department and its staff members. We could not have done without you. Last but not least, what about those of us who have excelled in some type of sports outside of school, whether it be golf, bowling, swimming, tennis, etc. Yes, let´s not forget about them. We are also very proud of you.

The Meaning of Sports at St. George´s School (read by Juan Sebastian Sánchez and Natalia Serrano)

For many years team and individual sports training and competitions have been taking place in our school environment. They are not only played for fun and to spend free time, but they are also performed to offer a complete education to our students through sports. The following objectives are taken into account throughout this process:

•  To strengthen ethic values through the understanding and application of rules related to a specific sports discipline in order to project themselves as human beings that act assertively within their social and cultural environment.

•  To offer the time and space for students to socialize and spend time with students from different schools in order to build learning based on differences as elements of human and social develpment.

•  To contribute to physical education which includes sports and physical activities as fundamental factors in maintaining general well-being and good health.

•  To improve motor skills, technical skills, and the tactics during training and competitions in order to enable high performance of the selected sport.

Furthermore, currently numerous organizations within the field of sports identify the following rights:

•  The right to participate in sports competitions that have the adequate level of skills for the specific age group.

•  The right to practice sports in a safe and healthy environment.

•  The right to train with a qualified coach.

•  The right to have equal opportunities, to be treated with dignity, and to have fun while playing sports.

Taking into account that school sports is a right and that it corresponds to the objectives of the complete education of a human being within the ethical , social, emotional, physical, and motor dimensions, our school has offered the time and space to encourage its practice in which a considerable number of people have always attended. These students practice and compete after school and on occassions in the evening which implies going home late to do homework and achieving excellent academic results.

We should admire the students who participate in sports due to the fact that besides being disciplined, talented, committed, responsible, persevering, respectful, and honest people, they also successfully represent our school within the ASOCOLDEP organization, but above all sports achievements, we should be proud of them for showing their courage and value as students of St. George´s school.
