By Mrs Camelia Gonzalez and Group 4B

“Violence and abuse affect all kinds of people every day. It doesn't matter what race or culture you come from, how much money you have, how old are you, or if you have a disability. Violence does not discriminate.”

A group of international experts from the World Health Organization, in February 1996 agreed that the definition of violence against women: “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.” This was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly offered the special framework for the Organization's activities.

Moreover, the violence against women produces in health status and society impacts such as: The increase of sexual risk-taking among adolescents, the transmission of STDs, including AIDS, unplanned pregnancies, among others.

Additionally, violence has indirect effects on society. It represents an unmanageable an exhausting economical problem in the productive workforce, generating fear and insecurity. “ Canada 's national survey on violence against women reported that 30% of battered wives had to cease regular activities due to the abuse, and 50% of women had to take sick leave from work because of the harm sustained.”

To conclude, abuse is found in many different ways. It can be physical, mental, and emotional. Violence against women in any form is a crime. Let's work together to Eradicate Violence Against Women around the world.
